'Las Dos Rok Starz'
june 15 - july 22, 2001
opening reception Fri. June 15, 6:30-9:30 pm
artists' talk: sat June 16, 6:30
Gracing billboards, train tunnels, boxcars, and the cracks of this city, Isis and Nicole's experimentation with cartoon characters, traditional graffiti motif, and distinctly feminist perspective have significantly contributed to the look of San Francisco.
Extending the usual modes of urban renegade artistry, the two have been known to kidnap and beautify everything from newspaper dispensers to entire bathrooms with marker, paint, and spunk.
In their installation at Pond, Isis and Nicole explore themes such as femalecidal tendencies, popular urban culture, the women's history of graffiti art, and the commodification of Hip Hop culture.
Isis Rodriguez
a.k.a. Little Miss Attitude, grew up in Topeka Kansas as a determined little girl drawing as many Hannah-Barbara cartoons as she possibly could. Isis spent years developing her own style, taking notes from tattoo art, prison art, early low brow artists like Big Daddy Roth and Robert Williams, feminist art, protest art, and underground comics. Isis became a feminist the first time a guy friend snapped her bra, realizing that she was kicked out of the boys club forever.
