What is OneTree(s)?
This Spring, Pond will plant up to 20 pairs of genetically identical walnut trees in public places throughout San Francisco's diverse microclimates. As the OneTree(s) are biologically identical, in the subsequent years they will render the social and environmental differences to which they are exposed.
About the OneTree(s) Exhibition
Jermijenko's signature integration of minimalist aesthetic strategies with hi and low-tech media (photography, video, surveillance devices, etc.) raise questions about issues related to the artist's ongoing OneTree(s) project. Formally engaging and art-historically allusive, the exhibition's various components contain a strong political message: in highlighting the differences between genetically identical organisms, Jeremjenko's work debunks the fear of genetic determinism (the belief that genes determine form) and affirms the significance of environmental influence.
