Free Mattress (Sept 27 - Oct 19) Opening Reception:
Sat September 27, 6-10 pm

Installation & Mixed Media by Dave Larsen, Marc Bell, Amy Lockhart, and Will Yackulic

Replete with endless non-sequiturs, grotesqueries, and enigmas, the work selected for Free Mattress is sure to rattle any viewer's expectations about signification. For instance, in Will Yackulic and Dave Larsen's works on paper (often in the form of self-published books), suggestive phrases (e.g., "When Ricky Beauchamp crapped his wetsuit" or "Dusseldorf ist calling") abut figures and objects that establish an elusive narrative. But pinpointing the exact narrative is analogous to participating in a game of charades where the actor never tells you exactly what he/she is pantomiming. At times, the work more aggressively resists

fascile digestion through self-conscious distancing mechanisms-take for example the text embedded in one of Larsen's zines that reads "Go Away Please! Why For the love of God! Why have you read this far?!"

The installations and video of Vancouver artists Marc Bell and Amy Lockhart share a similar absurdist humor and gritty aesthetic. In Amy Lockhart's video entitled "It's Party Time!", the central character, Miss Edmonton Teenburger, a 6 foot tall, 250 pound screeching and overgrown obsequious infant, personifies the anathema of the picture perfect well-behaved child. The low-resolution video and unabashed self-fashioned costumes heightens awareness of the beauty of naïve home-video and living-room suburban dramaturgy.
